PROFILE
OF DR BRIAN McLAREN
Photonic
therapy is an Australian concept of complementary medicine, based
on research published in 1996 by Dr Brian McLaren. Photonic therapy
is applied neuro-physiology, that is, the scientific application of
electro-biochemistry. Treatment consists of applying a particular
frequency of light (safe, gentle red light - not laser) to specific
points.
Dr Brian McLaren is a
clinical scientist, a veterinary surgeon and the highest qualified
acupuncturist in Australia, with postgraduate university
qualifications in both veterinary and human acupuncture. He is a
Fellow of the Australian Natural Therapists Association and a
Member of the International Society for the Study of Pain. His
Master's Degree thesis scientifically explained what an acupuncture
point is and how it came to be there and how acupuncture actually
works.

HOW PHOTONIC THERAPY
WORKS
Photonic Therapy is basically
the scientific application of light to specific acupuncture points
(areas of the skin of increased electrical conductivity), to
activate or produce particular physiological results.
We all have information about
our environment such as light intensity, temperature or clothing
touching the skin, flooding into the brain the whole time. The
brain has the ability to switch off and ignore these signals. It is
the same with pain. If a condition goes on for more than four to
six weeks the brain learns to accept the problem.
The energy of light (photons)
is transformed into electrical energy by the connective tissue
under the skin. This electrical energy is transmitted to the brain
by the nerves. Acupuncture points are known to be areas in the skin
of increased electrical conductivity, the stimulation of which can
change a body function. By stimulating these certain skin
areas, we can change the perception or messages the brain is
receiving. This causes the brain to release certain
chemicals, pain killers and anti-inflamatories, which activate the
body's healing processes.
McLaren Photonic Therapy
utilises broad band 660nm red light to provide the photons required
to painlessly and safely stimulate tissue. Visible light is a small
part of the electromagnetic spectrum and ranges between 400-700nm.
Wavelengths below 400nm (ultra violet) have high energy and do not
penetrate deeply into tissue but can cause damage such as
melanomas. Above 700nm, in the infrared range there is less energy
per photon and longer treatment times are required.
McLaren Photonic Therapy has
been successfully used to treat thousands of clinical cases in
people and animals, painlessly and without the risks associated
with skin penetration, such as AIDS or hepatitis.
It is also without the risks around the eyes associated with the
use of lasers. Because Photonic Therapy works so well on animals,
it obviously does not rely on a psychosomatic, hypnotic or placebo
effect, but is a valid therapeutic modality.
Photonic Therapy also works
by stimulating the body's defence mechanisms, releasing the body's
own pain killers, anti-inflamatories and encouraging the maximum
rate of healing. Virtually all physiological conditions of
the body may be treated.
Photonic Therapy used before
and after an operation reduces the time of wound healing and
decreases post-operative infection. It may be used as a
secondary or adjunctive therapy in cancer treatment, as it will
increase the immune response and decrease the immune suppressing
and secondary effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It
does this by providing an improved recovery of red and white blood
cell counts, without, in any way, interfering with the treatment
function.
TREATMENT USING
PHOTONIC THERAPY
Photonic Therapy treatment
consists of stimulation of skin areas, two or three times weekly
for five seconds per point. Usually only six to eight treatments
are required for most conditions. The longer the condition has
existed, the larger the number of treatments may be required. As
the treatment is totally safe and painless, longer treatment times
will not do any harm. It is merely a matter of placing the unit on
the skin. If a wrong point is treated the body will ignore
it, and no effect (good or bad) will be gained.
As it takes the body two to
three weeks to heal from most injuries, it is more important to
treat the body regularly over an extended period of time, than to
rush in five or six quick treatments and expect the same
results.
Young children require less
stimulation for the same results. They require only two to
four seconds of stimulation per acupuncture point.

Using Photonic Therapy it is
virtually impossible to over-stimulate a point. Stimulating
an incorrect point will not cause harm, but simply register a nil
effect.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE
RELATE TO WESTERN MEDICINE?
Acupuncture is
the ancient Chinese medical art of inserting fine needles into
predetermined points of the body to produce physiological changes
and healing. As a treatment system, acupuncture is as effective as,
or in some cases more effective than western medicine, particularly
when treating horses. Until recently the mode of action was not
fully understood and it could only be explained in terms of
ancient, non-scientific conceptual terms.
Physiology is the study of
how the body functions.
Neuro-physiology is the study
of how the nervous system functions.
Now that acupuncture's action
can be explained in scientific terms it may be demonstrated that
acupuncture is a form of applied neuro-physiology. This
understanding enabled the introduction of a rational, advanced
method of non-invasive 'acupuncture' treatment which is pain-free,
sterile, safe and very effective.
By using the energy of
particular wavelengths of light it is possible to stimulate tissue
and achieve physiological results. This method is known as McLaren
Photonic Therapy.
Your kit includes a video
demonstration as an introduction to McLaren Photonic Therapy as it
applies to the diagnosis and treatment of the horse.
WHY STIMULATE THE
SKIN?
The skin is the largest organ
of the body, comprises about 16% of the body's weight and has two
main functions which are protection and sensory. Under the skin is
connective tissue which converts any stimulation - pressure,
temperature or certain forms of light - into electrical impulses.
When the skin is stimulated the information is conveyed to the
brain electrically by the nerve cells.
An acupuncture point is an
area of the skin which has an increased electrical conductivity. By
stimulating acupuncture points in a given combination we can
stimulate the brain to release various neuro-chemicals which cause
the body to heal. Just as you can feel your collar around your neck
or your shoes on your feet, this information is going into the
brain the whole time but you learn to ignore it. When it is
mentioned you become aware of it. It a body is in pain for more
than two to three weeks the brain learns to ignore the signals and
while the body will stay in pain, the brain switches off the
healing process and the injury becomes chronic.
WHY USE
LIGHT?
Ordinary white light is
composed of some three hundred different wavelengths which is
equivalent to visible static. Together these wavelengths interfere
with each other and do not penetrate the skin. McLaren Photonic
Therapy uses single wavelengths of red light to penetrate the skin
and stimulate classical acupuncture points.
WHERE DO PHOTONS COME
FROM?
When light passes from one
medium to another (eg from air into water), the light is bent or
refracted because the speed of light changes with the density of
the material through which the light is passing. As the speed of
light changes, so does the wavelength, in tissue one has to talk of
the energy of light as if it was in little packets called
photons.
WHAT ARE
MERIDIANS?
While acupuncture points on a
horse may be organised according to a number of different systems,
the system used here is the nomenclature accepted by the
International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, which is a
transposition from the human charts. This system is the easiest to
learn as it is related to the Chinese concept of 12 main meridians
on each side of the body. These are named after body organs such as
the Bladder or Liver. There are two unpaired meridians (one along
the spine and one along the underline), making fourteen regular
meridians. In all animals and humans, three meridians run from the
chest to the fingers and three meridians run from the fingers to
the face, three from the face to the foot and three from the foot
back to the chest.
The meridians are an
imaginary, invisible branched network, which run along the body
surface and connect with the organs. By working with points on the
surface, the interior of the body can be affected. In Chinese
theory, the function of the meridians is primarily to transport the
body's vital energy and to reflect symptoms of disease. In
acupuncture theory, pain or disease is seen as a stagnation or
blockage of energy, and so points along the channels become
tender.
Each acupuncture point has a
name, which is composed of the initial letters of the meridian and
the point number. This is like a street name and house number. The
meridians are named after body organs. For example, the second
point on the Bladder meridian is called Bladder 2 (BL2). Even
though a horse does not have a Gall Bladder, it does have a
meridian called the Gall Bladder Meridian, which is used to treat
tendon and joint problems, particularly hip joint
problems.
